Jello: Nope. It doesn't work that way. You can't just
toss out the games that you don't like. When measuring against P5, you
have to take ALL of the games. Be they "Home" games, "Away"
games, or games vs. "Utah", they ALL count. Additionally, just because
an "average P5 team" would go .500, that doesn't mean that the
cougars would do so likewise, as they are in fact not a P5 team. They're a
"midmajor". And "midmajors" typically lose those games. The Y has been posting losing records vs. P5 teams for years. Since
1998 thru their MWC swan song, the cougars have posted losing records vs. the
teams from the Power conferences (23-31, .426), and since leaving the MWC, they
again have amassed a losing record against them (13-17, .433). Nothing has
deductive reasoning:"Unfortunately for U, ESPN has no such
respect for U..."Nope. You made that up. How frantic and
emotional of you. ESPN ranked Utah 23rd in their Final "ESPN Power"
poll (Google: "Final 2016-17 Power Rankings settle all debates", Jan.
12, 2017).The cougars on the other hand didn't even get any
votes. Even Western Kentucky got some votes. I guess ESPN has more respect for
the Hilltoppers than they do the cougs.
"Don't get me wrong, this is not great and there is room for
improvement. But even the most biased of evaluators would have to admit that BYU
is competitive with other P5 teams since Independence."Yes, but
there are those who are so biased that they are obsessed. These people do not
see reason when evaluating football programs. ESPN, like Sagarin, is attempting
to make a ranking based entirely on objective measures and once again finds BYU
right by the Utes. There's a reason Utah only beat BYU by one point at
Many on these threads have commented on the decline of BYU's football
program and use their performance against P5's and especially Utah as
proof. Here are some facts that refute that:*An average P5 team
will go 500 winning most of their home games and losing most of their away
games.*Since going independent, BYU has a 13-18 record against
P5's. On the service this would project as a below average team.*Of those 31 games, BYU played 11 at home and 18 on the road. If they were
merely a average P5 team, their record would be around 11-18. *By
BYU winning 13 it would show that in the last 6 years against P5's with the
equal number of home games to away games their record would be more like
17-14.*5 of BYU's losses came at the hands of Utah. They have
definitely had their number. Taking those away, BYU's record against all
P5's not Utah is 13-13. Of those 26 games only 9 were home games.Don't get me wrong, this is not great and there is room for improvement.
But even the most biased of evaluators would have to admit that BYU is
competitive with other P5 teams since Independence.
Roadrunner,6 in a row16 of 23 and during that time span
there have been 3 blowouts.... BYU being the recipient of each beating. It appears just one person hasn't accepted that Utah is now playing
at a different level than BYU winning head-to-head, more BCS, more CFP rankings,
better bowl record and beating teams that finish the year ranked.BYU
gets the award for beating the most cupcakes with it's annual weak SOS.
To Roadrunner, see below:deductive reasoning - Arlington, VAFeb. 15, 2017 2:29 p.m.For dumbest call in college football, see Utah
player dropping the ball just before the goal line.
What are they seeing that I'm not on Utah? I know they lost quite a few
starters, but picking 8 PAC teams, to include the entire South Div., in front of
them is crazy. It is nice to see that the Only non-P5 conference
members picked in front of BYU are ND and Memphis. This seems sustainable to

you're close enough to the top to actually be in contention for a CFP berth
or an NY6 invite.-----Yes being nationally relevant is
meaningless down south which is why they celebrate Sagarin and ESPN rankings.Ask 2014 CFP #20 Boise State, just ahead of #21 Utah, how meaningless
CFP was after they got a NY6 invite.

Yes it is way too early to worry about polls. I am surprised at how low both
are. I expected Utah to be ranked a little ahead of BYU, but I expected them
both to be in the high twenties or low thirties. Can't wait to
see what happens. I think both teams are a bit of a mystery right now.
UUWho said anything about Whit making the call?
T RedWhat's really been proven on the field over the better
part of the last decade is that there is very little separation between these
two teams.Utah 20 BYU 19 on Utah's home field in 2016 is proof
deductive reasoning - "For dumbest call in college football, see Utah player
dropping the ball just before the goal line"Dropping the ball is
a strong contender, but the award should really go to"4th and 19 on
our own 5 yard line? Let's fake the punt!"That was comedy gold.
Rankings at this time mean less than nothing, but the espn rankings for both BYU
and Utah is an insult. 49 and 50? Seriously? I'm a BYU fan and I am not too
fond of Utah, but this makes me hope that we both prove them wrong. Here's
to BYU going undefeated and Utah only losing to BYU next year! Or, more
realistically, both playing well enough to be in the top 25.
Someone actually thinks Whit made a call to have his player drop the ball before
crossing the goal line? Wow, now that's funny. Some fans don't
understand the difference between a play call and a player decision. That gap in logic explains why some anoint themselves pre-season contenders
only to watch it collapse all around them before September is over.... like
clockwork, year after year.
deductive reasoning-"For dumbest call in college football, see Utah player dropping the ball..." You think that was a call,
"The CFP ranking are meaningless"reactive reasoning:Being a coog fan, of course you'd say that, seeing how the coogs
have never sniffed one--not once. And to suggest ESPN's
off-season non-ranking rankings mean more than the CFP? Most amusing!
Ute buster - Salt Lake City, UTFeb. 15, 2017 10:35 a.m.This is
not going to sit well with ute fans.---------We couldn't
care less. Why?Because it's been proven on the field
for the better part of a decade who the better team is. Year in and year out,
it's Utah.Your sorry chest-beating only reinforces why you are
so thoroughly mocked for celebrating offseason championships every single
year. It's groundhog day every year. BYU rated higher by some
obscure writer, only to collapse during the season and finish miles outside the
top 25.Stings eating our dust for eight years in a row, don't
Linehan's valentine card is hilarious and refreshing. I'm a Ute fan
but I'm impressed with a talented athlete that can laugh at himself and not
take things so seriously. Unlike the posters that constantly post here (both BYU
and Utah fans), it shows a lot of class and healthy self image. We should all
learn from such a great example. I can't believe that anyone should be
arguing about a preseason poll, before spring football even begins, and proud of
being 49 or 50. Shouldn't we all be a little embarrassed?
For dumbest call in college football, see Utah player dropping the
ball just before the goal line and then cluelessly watching the opposing team
return the "fumble" 99 yards for a touchdown.
JohnInSLCThe CFP ranking are meaningless,unless
you're close enough to the top to actually be in contention for a CFP berth
or an NY6 invite.Unfortunately for U, ESPN has no such respect for
U, which is why U ended up playing a mediocre bowl opponent that hasn't won
a bowl game in a quarter of a century.
Ute buster-In the spring, we Ute fans chuckle at snickering cougar
fans. In September we'll chuckle at the excuses coming out of Provo.
EEK,Did I mention BYU? No.Actually I do feel better about the
utes at 50. Now that is funny.
Ute buster,Funny how you feel pretty good about 49th.
Rankings have little credibility at the end of the season and they have none
now. As for the dumbest call ever in college sports, I'm not sure it was
the dumbest, but it's got to rank up there towards the top.
49th is just about right for byu if they win all 8 of their cupcake games. go
Good attitude shown by Linehan. Reminds me of Kaelin Clay's positive
response to his ball drop.
@Ute busterDon't feel sorry for the Utes, they've actually
been ranked in the College Football Playoff polls every year since it began 3
years ago.... BYU not so much. Expect more of the same in 2017.
Gandalph"Utes trailing BYU in early ESPN 2017 pre-season
ranking, just like they trailed BYU in Sagarin 2016 final ranking. Let the
weeping and wailing and spin begin."________I doubt too
many Ute fans care about trailing BYU in polls that mean nothing at the end of
the year or at the beginning of the year. Polls that do matter... CFP
first and foremost (Utah has never missed and BYU has never made). Then AP
and Coaches.Everything else is just fluff and a way for certain fans to
feel better about their team.
I put zero stock in FPI. There's criteria built into that model that
consistently leads to underrating the Utah football program based on Kyle's
style of play. Perhaps the new offensive scheme this year will change that a bit
but I couldn't care less about the FPI when it so consistently misses the
target on Utah and other programs. I do however care about the CFP poll
which Utah has yet to miss, let's keep that rollin. Go Utes!
"Let the weeping and wailing and spin begin."gandolf:No weeping and wailing. It's just ESPN trying to save their
investment and prop up your coog's faltering brand. Those rankings are
meaningless, unlike the CFP poll. Ever heard of it?
Gandalph "...just like they trailed BYU in Sagarin 2016 final
ranking."Is that the great thing about sports in this state?
There is something for everyone.Utah fans can enjoy the scoreboard,
AP, and CFP top twenty five rankings.Cougar fans can enjoy a quiet
November and something called a "Sagarin ranking".
What to the football experts know. The kids on the hill should be ranked in the
top 5. Funny how their star-studded recruiting class (snicker, snicker) is
not what the ute fans think it was. This is not going to sit well with ute
BYU is ahead of the Utes nearly every year - before the season begins, that is.
Rankings at this point really don't matter much. I'll still consider
the Utes the better team until the Cougs beat them.
Looks like ESPN wasn't nearly as "star struck" with the latest
recruiting class as the kids on the hill were.
Johnny's personality is incredible. He hit an issue with appropriate humor.
Glad he's back next year.
I only watch BYU, but think Utah a stronger team. Time for BYU to win, but
maybe not this year.
